Nominations are now open.

 

You get four fandom slots, eight “character” slots, and four canon helpers.

 

 

Fandoms

This should be rather self-explanatory.  Any fandom is eligible.  This includes RPF, original works, and crossovers.  Fandoms based on fan based works will be allowed in on a case by case basis.  For this section you should try and go for the more umbrella level of the fandom such as MCU, DCAU, or Dangan Ronpa – All Media Types.  Fandoms will be further subdivided using Canon Helpers, which is covered in a later section of this guide.

 

Characters

You may nominate any female character or group of female characters under the character field.  If a character’s status as female is uncertain then comment.  I will normally accept it if you make a case where I can reasonably see why you interpret this character as female.  I will also accept non-specific original female characters.  So original mad scientist is fine, Dr. Mean your OC is not.  If a character is confirmed to exist but doesn’t have a canonical gender, for example a wizard that is mentioned but never showed up, they can be nominated.

 

You may also nominate groups.  This should be in the form of Group: Alice & Sally.  Groups do not imply a specific relationship.  They just mean that the person creating for that tag has to include all the characters.  You may add as many characters as you want to the tag.  All characters in the group must be eligible for that fandom on their own.  Groups must be a clearly defined list of characters.  Don’t nominate Group: Female Avengers, instead nominate Group: Natasha Romanoff & Wanda Maximoff.  Groups should only be nominated in character slots.  Do not put them in relationships.

 

RPF nominations should not include anybody under the age of 18.  I will not accept non-famous family and friends.  Any RPF nominations can be removed at the request of that individual.  I reserve the rights to reject any RPF on reasons of bad taste. 

 

Canon Helpers

Canon helpers should be nominated under the relationship field.  The format is CH: Guardians of the Galaxy, CH: Madoka Magica anime series, or CH: Final Fantasy X.  Canon helpers will be used to make sure that you only match on parts of a fandom that you are familiar with.  These will be used for things such as adaptations versus original or  what part of a large fandom do you want.  In order for someone to match to you both of you must be offering and requesting at least one canon helper in common in addition to the normal fandom, character, and medium requirements.  Only canon helpers go in relationships, nothing else.

 

The advantages of this system is that fewer groups will have to go under crossovers.  It allows both the people that want their fandoms grouped together and the ones that want them to be split apart to be accommodated.  So if you are say only interested in the Agents of SHIELD part of the MCU then you’d select MCU as your fandom, the relevant characters/groups, and then CH: Agents of SHIELD.  Only somebody interested in writing/arting that part of the MCU would be matched to you.  While someone else that wants everybody and everything could also be accommodated. 

 

If I choose to fold your fandom under an umbrella fandom I will add the canon helper myself.  If you require more canon helpers than what I’ve allowed then comment and I will manually add them in.

Star Trek

Umbrella fandom? I've nominated assuming yes given how many kinds of Trek there are, but it won't let me include Jadzia Dax or Tora Ziyal as they've already been nominated (unapproved as far as I can see) by someone else under Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as a non-umbrella fandom.

If you don't decide to umbrella Trek, just let me know and I can edit my nominations accordingly so you don't need to tweak them.

I know the shows very well for Star Trek. I'm currently thinking of putting Next Gen/DS9/Voyager together, Enterprise by itself, the original/animated series together, and then the Kelvin universe as its own thing. Discovery will be determined if it ever actually comes out. Movies and such would be in the era that they fall under. Does those groupings make sense to you?

I would personally split out the TV shows, not group any, if the CH tags might influence matching much. I don't know TNG much at all for instance, and though I know both DS9 and Voyager I'm only so-so on being able to write Voyager. Otherwise (Ent/AOS/TOS/movies) that does make sense to me though, and unless I'm misunderstanding how the CH tags work I think I could work with the grouping regardless because obviously my character/group choices would only be ones I know I can write anyway...

Edit yet again sorry: okay actually I think I get the use of CH a bit better now. So (assuming they're all split out) if say I wanted to write Jadzia Dax and Janeway but I wanted it to be in a DS9 setting I'd need to match with someone on: Star Trek, Group: Jadzia & Janeway, CH: DS9. Whereas if someone wanted to request Jadzia on Voyager, they'd select CH: Voy.

If I'm understanding that correctly as part of the point of CH's then yes, I would vote for splitting them out. I would potentially be comfortable to write/request one but not the other depending on the CH. I don't know how common my less consistent Trek exposure is, but given the shows are generally pretty long and they're older canons now, I'd say I'm probably not the only person who might need them split.

Of course if I'm totally misunderstanding that use of CH, group away! :P

In the scenario you suggested it would only be possible for you to match the Star Trek, Group: Jadzia & Janeway, CH: DS9. The use of canon helpers would prevent you from being matched to the CH: Voy one. The use of CHs is to let both people that want to have very specific parts of a fandom and very broad parts of a fandom both be accommodated. So if you picked the relevant characters and then CH: DS9 you'd only be matched with people who were also into DS9. Now, say you requested CH: DS9 specifically, and someone else who knew all of Trek offered all three of CH: TNG, CH: DS9, CH: VOY they could still be matched to write for you but they'd know that you only wanted DS9. While somebody that was only into TNG couldn't be matched to you at all.

I'd like to get all the Trek shows lumped together, this way I could, for example, request Jadzia/Uhura fic or any other alike crossover. ;D BTW, if you want to keep Enterprise separated, it may do things hard if someone wants to nominate stuff from the last two episodes of the forth season, which sort-of cross-over with TOS and TNG.

Besides, we get TOS Bones (OK, he's not eligible) on TNG, and TOS Sulu and Chapel (she's definitely eligible) on Voyager.

So my vote is to keep them under the same fandom umbrella (except for the books, the reboot, and other non-TV media, of course), and then to use the canon helpers.

Oh maybe I misunderstood pumpkinkingmod then - I was thinking it would all be grouped under Star Trek with CH for AOS, Ent, DS9, Voy (or CH: DS9/Voy/TNG depending on the decision there)...

So the CH would determine whether you want AOS or TOS and you could thus cross Uhura over however you like. Is that right pumpkinkingmod?

Either way - is there a reason you don't think AOS can be used under an umbrella? It's actually I think the perfect example of where the CH would be most useful because it's the same character name but a rather dramatically different character backstory.

Which actually reminds me - do we need to consider mirrorverse for a CH at all? Yikes, Trek, you have so many variations.

In this particular case putting AOS and TOS under the same fandom tag could make things messier, since AOS!Spock and TOS!Spock aren't the same character, but TOS!Spock is AOS!Prime-Spock. Okay, Spock isn't an eligible character, but anyone wanting non-Spock TOS!characters on AOS would be hard to nominate that, I think?

Or maybe no one is interested in that and I'm overthinking it.

That makes a lot of sense, but conversely in another exchange I recently requested Dax centric DS9 era fic in AOS exploring the ripple effects of the timeline changes. That wouldn't work here as Jadzia or Ezri Dax isn't an AOS character to fall in under a separate AOS tag set but if she just falls under the broader Star Trek banner I can just tick the appropriate CH. That's a pretty niche request though, and I don't know how niche your scenario might also be given Spock is the only canon character to cross over. Either or both might be getting more nitpicky than makes sense to handle as anything other than optional details.

Personally my preference is to allow as much crossover between shows/movies/eras without resorting to the crossover fandom section as possible (ideally not at all), while still keeping plenty of CH separators depending on canon familiarity. The more is umbrella'd with CHs the better for me as a participant, but happy to bow to what is easier for matching or for others if there is a cluster of people who'll have mirror or TOS-Prime identification issues.

I see your point. As you said, considering that only Spock crosses over to AOS, maybe you're right and with him ineligible anyway, it wouldn't be confusing as I initially thought.

The last problem with lumping together all the subfandoms that I foresee is if someone wants a different set of characters on TOS and AOS, or on any "subcanons" actually. Requesting more canons helpers on the same request makes matching trickier, as it could mean to risk to match the wrong Character-or-Ship/CH combos.

For example, if I want to request TOS!Uhura and Gaila, either I drop my Gaila & CH: AOS request in order to avoid to match with someone offering AOS!Uhura, or I risk it anyway.

Same with your Jadzia request under AOS, you could risk to get matched to someone offering Jadzia & CH: DS9 together with Gaila & CH: AOS, for example. I suppose this is one of those cases where people signing up should check the requests carefully in order to avoid mismatches like the examples above. Unless I missed a solution to this when I've checked the rules? I apologize if I did.

I'd like to hear what other people or mod prefer to do as well, though.

That'd be my vote, too. The chronological division makes sense, but I like leaving the option open to mix and match time periods, and I could see running into a situation where I don't have enough request/offer slots for both the 23rd and the 24th century.

I suppose in this case mod should maximize the available character slots on the signup form, that is 20. Would be 20 slot enough for all your characters and ships across the shows and movies?

I was planning on putting the max at 20. I'm also going to look into allowing additional tags for characters to up it even more, but no promises on that front. It's just something that I'm looking into.
