Nominations are Open

Nominations are now open.

You get four fandom slots, eight “character” slots, and four canon helpers.

Fandoms

This should be rather self-explanatory.  Any fandom is eligible.  This includes RPF, original works, and crossovers.  Fandoms based on fan based works will be allowed in on a case by case basis.  For this section you should try and go for the more umbrella level of the fandom such as MCU, DCAU, or Dangan Ronpa – All Media Types.  Fandoms will be further subdivided using Canon Helpers, which is covered in a later section of this guide.

Characters

You may nominate any female character or group of female characters under the character field.  If a character’s status as female is uncertain then comment.  I will normally accept it if you make a case where I can reasonably see why you interpret this character as female.  I will also accept non-specific original female characters.  So original mad scientist is fine, Dr. Mean your OC is not.  If a character is confirmed to exist but doesn’t have a canonical gender, for example a wizard that is mentioned but never showed up, they can be nominated.

You may also nominate groups.  This should be in the form of Group: Alice & Sally.  Groups do not imply a specific relationship.  They just mean that the person creating for that tag has to include all the characters.  You may add as many characters as you want to the tag.  All characters in the group must be eligible for that fandom on their own.  Groups must be a clearly defined list of characters.  Don’t nominate Group: Female Avengers, instead nominate Group: Natasha Romanoff & Wanda Maximoff.  Groups should only be nominated in character slots.  Do not put them in relationships.

RPF nominations should not include anybody under the age of 18.  I will not accept non-famous family and friends.  Any RPF nominations can be removed at the request of that individual.  I reserve the rights to reject any RPF on reasons of bad taste.

Canon Helpers

Canon helpers should be nominated under the relationship field.  The format is CH: Guardians of the Galaxy, CH: Madoka Magica anime series, or CH: Final Fantasy X.  Canon helpers will be used to make sure that you only match on parts of a fandom that you are familiar with.  These will be used for things such as adaptations versus original or  what part of a large fandom do you want.  In order for someone to match to you both of you must be offering and requesting at least one canon helper in common in addition to the normal fandom, character, and medium requirements.  Only canon helpers go in relationships, nothing else.

The advantages of this system is that fewer groups will have to go under crossovers.  It allows both the people that want their fandoms grouped together and the ones that want them to be split apart to be accommodated.  So if you are say only interested in the Agents of SHIELD part of the MCU then you’d select MCU as your fandom, the relevant characters/groups, and then CH: Agents of SHIELD.  Only somebody interested in writing/arting that part of the MCU would be matched to you.  While someone else that wants everybody and everything could also be accommodated.

If I choose to fold your fandom under an umbrella fandom I will add the canon helper myself.  If you require more canon helpers than what I’ve allowed then comment and I will manually add them in.

If you feel your fandom needs to be split up further than what canon helpers would allow then contact me and explain why.

Yes, please! There are so many possible characters if everything is kept together that nominations/requests could be quite restrictive.

Silm and other histories is a good category since it is fairly separate from Hobbit and LotR. I could see CHs for Children of Húrin and the Akallabêth, but those might not even strictly be necessary, since CoH can be subsumed in "other histories" and is contained in the Silm in a less detailed version, and the Akallabêth (the part of the story dealing with Númenor and its fall) is self-contained by definition.

For LotR and the Hobbit, there should definitely be options to separate out books and movies, since those are the big dividing lines, so CH: LotR (book), LotR (movies) (or CH: LotR Jackson Movies if anyone wants to make sure they end up with Bakshi movie fic, but I doubt that's going to be a problem), CH: Hobbit (book) and CH: Hobbit (movies) would be good to have.

I think the DC Animated Universe (e.g. Batman: TAS, Justice League, Young Justice) and CW TV shows (e.g. Arrow, Supergirl, Flash) might need to be their own umbrellas.

Just checking - is Star Wars being lumped wholesale into AMT, or are we splitting between "canon"/"legends"/(video games), or some other OT/PT/ST/TCW/Comics configuration?

I've nominated CH: Guardians of the Galaxy under the wrong slot and it was approved. I've denominated it under relationships now.

The most common split I feel would be:
Original Trilogy
Prequel Trilogy
Sequel Trilogy
Clone Wars & Rebels (canon helpers would be awesome here; Clone Wars charas make their way into Rebels -which is generally considered a spiritual sequel- but opinions are mixed on how their characterization worked out)
Legends books
Video games (KotOR, Force Unleashed, Battlefront)

But I'm all for other people weighing in. I kind of like the idea of eras (with maybe this as a framework), but it would also be very different (and you might end up having to explain it ten million times).

That will be interesting, but sure. It would certainly cut down on the categories. So, 'Star Wars Movies' instead of Original/Prequels/Sequels? How do you want the canon helpers to shake down then - by individual movie or by trilogy?

Correct. The Holiday Special (should anyone request it...) is technically Legends now, too.

So you're suggesting Clone Wars & Rebels be nominated as one, with canon helpers to designate? So if I wanted Ahsoka, I'd nominate her under an umbrella of both, but then could add a canon helper to indicate if I only wanted Clone Wars? In that case, am I understanding right that if I did want both, I'd add both Clone Wars and Rebels?

I don't want to make a big issue of this because I probably won't nominate her, but in case someone does or it's important to another situation, how would Padme be nominated, when she's in both Clone Wars and the Prequel Trilogy?

For video games, does it makes sense to lump the unrelated video games together? I guess you can use canon helpers to indicate, but unlike the movies or Clone Wars & Rebels (or all of those together), there's zero overlap or real continuity between the Old Republic games and the Force Unleashed or Battlefront, so I'm not sure what the benefit of lumping them together would be, though I guess it's not the end of the world if they are. Also, would it be best to have SWTOR grouped with the two KOTOR games (which I do think should be together), or as its own thing? There is really only one significant character in common, but they are very much in the same general era/continuity, so I could go either way.

I would like to nominate a character from Born of Hope (2009) - the fan film prequel to LOTR that was done amazingly well (71 min, high production values). Now, some characters in that film are unique to the film alone and would not appear in LOTR at all, but some (such as Gilraen) would be shared. Should I nominate this as a separate fandom from LOTR? I could go either way when it comes to nominating/requesting groups (nominating/requesting only one character in the film, or nominating/requesting them in a group with other characters that are in LOTR only). It's not an *official* prequel but the story is almost completely canonical with the book (two minor details only) and would fit perfectly with the films. However, there are possibly fans of LOTR who may not even be aware that the film exists...

Do we need to nominate canon helpers for canons where there is only one version of the canon? (For instance, a book series with no film/TV adaptations, an original TV show...) If so, how do we format it? Just CH: fandom name? I just want to make sure I'm doing this right before I click submit...

I would like to nominate some characters for The Lord of the Rings. How should I do that under the new system?

As I think on it more, I'm almost think there should be an "Animated Star Wars" umbrella + canon helpers. Do I think someone is going to nominate Star Wars: Ewoks? No, but if they do then where does the tv series get lumped into?

Anyways. To answer your original question, you would nominate Ahsoka under "Clone Wars & Rebels", and then could use "CH: Clone Wars" to specify where you wanted her from. And if you would like something from Rebels, you would also add "CH: Rebels". (Or at least, that's how I'm understanding the canon helpers. You might also be able to leave off both of them - indicating that you don't have a preference. Perhaps the mod can weigh in?)

Padmé could be nominated for both, basically how we've done it in the past. "Padmé Amidala (Prequels)" would fall under the "Star Wars Movies" umbrella, and "Padmé Amidala (Clone Wars)" would fall under the previously discussed "TCW & Rebels" umbrella. I've never needed to do it for Padmé, because she's such a popular character, but I have done this in the past for Barriss Offee.

I have absolutely no stake in the video games on a personal level - this is just how I've seen them done in other exchanges. (The SW video games I care about for fanfic are just Clone Wars spinoffs, so I can lump them into the TV series.) I've only seen someone request Force Unleashed once, and Battlefront never - I expect it to be filled with KotOR characters. But if you have a better solution, that's what this comment thread is for.

*is still mildly bitter she can't get KotOR to work on her computer, fucking Steam*

...just thinking on this some more, but Star Wars (Marvel Comics) should probably be a category, too. Because they're canon they can't slip into the other Legends (/Infinities comics). Arguably, you could plug them into the movies because afaik they all tie in, but I also know they're harder to get ahold of, and as such, have a smaller, more dedicated fanbase. (I want to read them, but I haven't found a good place to do so yet...)

Umbrella fandom? I've nominated assuming yes given how many kinds of Trek there are, but it won't let me include Jadzia Dax or Tora Ziyal as they've already been nominated (unapproved as far as I can see) by someone else under Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as a non-umbrella fandom.

If you don't decide to umbrella Trek, just let me know and I can edit my nominations accordingly so you don't need to tweak them.
Edited (expanded DS9 to Deep Space Nine as I realised I have no idea how well you know Trek! *facepalm*) 2017-05-02 08:49 (UTC)
